Lewis Farms

Geoff & Liz Lewis

Geoff & Liz have several asparagus beds  located near to the Tendertips Packhouse. The packhouse is sited on their home farm, which is convenient for Geoff in his role as Joint Managing Director of the Tendertips Company. Both Geoff and Liz are directors of Tendertips.

As well as their asparagus interests, Geoff and Liz are involved in a family development of a dairy farm business which absorbs much of their spare time. They are keen travellers and enjoy spending time with their family and friends.

Kellow Road Asparagus Block.

Kellow_MowJun09

This block is the largest  bed supplying Tendertips. The block has had several plantings over the last 10 years. There are three varieties planted at different times. The varieties are Jersey Giant, JWC1 and Pacific 2000.

Oturoa Road Asparagus Block.

An older planting, Oturoa is gradually being phased out of production. It has Jersey Giant, JWC1 and Taramea varieties planted.

Following the principles of sustainability, and lowering the carbon inputs, has lead Lewis Farms to reduce cultivation of the asparagus beds and instead plant oats as a shelter crop. The oats protect the emerging asparagus shoots from wind and also increase the humus content of the sandy soil. It is only occassionaly necessary to replant the oats as they naturally reseed themselves.

Martyn Abraham is the farm manager for Lewis Farms.
